Risk Factors

Having the following factors may put you at higher risk for developing diabetes:

  • Being overweight
  • Carrying most of your fat in your stomach area
  • Not being physically active
  • Having a parent or brother or sister with diabetes
  • Being a certain race — including blacks, Hispanics,
    American Indians, and Asian-Americans
  • Being age 45 or older
  • Having prediabetes
  • Giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds or having gestational diabetes when you were pregnant

Take this test from the American Diabetes Association to see if you are at higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
