In November 2012, my brother told me about a community health fair at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, hosted by the Durham Diabetes Coalition.
When I was there, I got screened for type 2 diabetes. My blood sugar was 493.
The health care providers at the health fair talked to me about diabetes and what I needed to do next. They got me a doctor appointment right away.
Now I'm controlling my diabetes with medication, a better diet, and more exercise. Since I got diagnosed, I've been making a real effort to walk more and eat healthier.
I just want to thank the Durham Diabetes Caolition for helping me. I'm so glad they were there that day.

I was so thirsty I was drinking four two-liter sodas a day.
Then my doctor told me I had type 2 diabetes. I ended up in the hospital with a blood sugar of 869.
My doctor put me in touch with the Durham Diabetes Coalition clinical team. A nurse came to my house to check my medication and a nutritionist worked with me to come up with a healthy meal plan.
Now I ride my bike or walk most days. And I’m eating less fatty foods and cut out soda.
If you have type 2 diabetes, you should see how the Durham Diabetes Coalition can help you.
